The Pope has never made a visit to Russia. This is no coincidence. If Russian Orthodox people and Orthodox Christians in general had to single out the most egregious disagreement with Catholics, it would be over the necessity for a Pope. It is a millenium-old dispute that fractured the two churches to begin with and continues to drive them apart today.
Anyways, the NYT had a nice little piece about Russian Orthodoxy and its general antipathy towards the pope.
